Neumayer Station III<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Alfred Wegener Institute\u2019s Neumayer Station III is located on the Ekstr\u00f6m Ice Shelf\u2014which is about 200 meters thick\u2014in Atka Bay and is the only German research station in Antarctica where people live and work year-round. Nine overwinterers spend up to 15 months here, connected to the outside world for long stretches only by radio. At the very top of the station, 29 meters above the garage floor, lies the balloon hall: From here, the meteorological observatory launches its weather balloons daily to conduct high-altitude atmospheric soundings\u2014a series of measurements that ranks among the most important long-term observations in Antarctic research. To do this, the hall must open reliably. Every day. In any weather.<\/p>

That was precisely the problem: Under Antarctic conditions, the balloon hall\u2019s existing sectional doors kept freezing shut and had to be laboriously thawed before each use\u2014a daily drain on the station crew\u2019s time and energy that noticeably hampered measurement operations. The Alfred Wegener Institute therefore sought a door solution that would structurally resolve this problem rather than merely manage it. The list of requirements read like a specification for extreme conditions: guaranteed functionality at temperatures as low as -40 \u00b0C, structural stability at wind speeds of up to 63 m\/s\u2014or about 227 km\/h\u2014and absolute corrosion resistance, since repairs are practically impossible at the southernmost tip of the world.<\/p>

BUCHELE designed two hydraulically operated gates with an integrated heating function for the balloon hangar. The heating system is the key feature: It prevents seals and moving parts from freezing solid and simply eliminates the need for laborious manual defrosting. A coating rated for corrosion category C4 and all stainless steel hardware ensure that the components can withstand the perpetual ice over the long term. For the installation, BUCHELE ultimately sent one of its own technicians to Antarctica. He oversaw the installation on site and handed over both doors, fully operational, to the station crew. Since then, the balloon hangar has opened reliably at the push of a button, regardless of the weather conditions this continent has to offer. A project that, like no other, demonstrates what BUCHELE stands for: specialty doors that perform where standard solutions have long since failed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
